Why I Started Writing Poetry in Zimbabwe

Every writer has a beginning, and this is mine. In this article, I share how living in Zimbabwe shaped my love for poetry, how everyday experiences inspired my writing, and why I believe words have the power to bring hope, faith, and healing to the world.

How Ordinary Moments Became Extraordinary Words

Every writer has a beginning, but not every beginning starts with a perfect plan. Mine certainly did not. I never woke up one morning and decided that I wanted to become a poet. I simply discovered that there were thoughts in my heart which could not be expressed through ordinary conversation. They needed something deeper. They needed rhythm, emotion, and meaning. That is how my journey into poetry quietly began here in Zimbabwe.

Growing up in Zimbabwe taught me many valuable lessons. It taught me perseverance during difficult times, gratitude during seasons of blessing, and hope even when circumstances were uncertain. Like many Zimbabweans, I experienced days that were filled with both joy and struggle. Those experiences became the foundation of my writing. Every challenge taught me something, and every lesson eventually found its way onto the pages of my notebook.

Zimbabwe is a country filled with remarkable beauty. From its breathtaking landscapes to the warmth of its people, there is inspiration almost everywhere you look. Life here is not always easy, but perhaps that is what makes our stories so meaningful. Behind every smile is a testimony of resilience, and behind every family is a story worth telling. Living among people who continue to hope despite adversity helped me understand that poetry is not merely about beautiful words. It is about capturing the human experience with honesty and compassion.

When I first began writing, I never imagined that my poems would one day be shared with readers around the world. At the time, writing was simply a personal way of expressing my thoughts, feelings, and faith. Whenever I experienced happiness, gratitude, disappointment, or hope, I found myself reaching for a pen instead of searching for someone to talk to. The blank pages became a safe place where I could be completely honest, and over time those pages slowly filled with poems that reflected different chapters of my life.

One of the greatest influences on my writing has always been my faith in Jesus Christ. My beliefs have shaped the way I see people, the way I approach life's challenges, and the messages I hope to share through my poetry. Rather than writing only to entertain, I want my words to encourage, uplift, and remind readers that there is always hope, even during life's darkest moments. Whether I write about service, love, forgiveness, or personal growth, my desire is to point people toward the light rather than the darkness.

Serving as a missionary in the Ghana Kumasi Mission also transformed the way I write. During those two years, I met incredible people whose faith, humility, and kindness left a lasting impression on me. I learned lessons that no classroom could have taught me, and many of those experiences continue to inspire my poems today. Although I began writing before my mission, it was during that sacred period of service that my passion for writing grew into something much greater. I realized that words have the power to strengthen faith, comfort broken hearts, and inspire people to become better versions of themselves.

Many people assume that poetry must always be about romance or sadness. While those themes certainly have their place, I have always believed poetry can be much more than that. A poem can teach. It can inspire. It can preserve memories that would otherwise be forgotten. It can remind someone that they are loved, that they are capable, and that they are never alone. That is the kind of poetry I strive to write.

Every poem I create begins with a simple question: "What message does someone need to hear today?" Sometimes the answer becomes a poem about faith. Other times it becomes a poem about serving others, overcoming fear, or choosing hope during difficult seasons. I believe the greatest poems are not those that simply sound beautiful but those that leave a lasting impact on the reader's heart.

Starting LugenZim Tech became another important step in my journey. I wanted a place where my poems and books could reach readers beyond my local community. More importantly, I wanted to build something that reflected my values—a place where creativity, faith, learning, and encouragement could come together. LugenZim Tech is more than a website where I publish books. It is a home for stories, poems, and ideas that I hope will inspire people for many years to come.

When someone asks me why I started writing poetry in Zimbabwe, my answer is simple. I write because I believe every life has a story worth telling. I write because words have the power to heal hearts, strengthen faith, and inspire hope. I write because God has blessed me with experiences that deserve to be remembered and shared. Most importantly, I write because I hope that somewhere, someone will read one of my poems at exactly the moment they need it most.

My journey as a poet is still unfolding, and I know there are many more stories yet to be written. Every new experience teaches me something valuable, and every lesson becomes another opportunity to create. As long as there are hearts searching for hope, lives searching for purpose, and people looking for encouragement, I will continue writing.

Zimbabwe will always be the place where my journey began. It is the soil where the first seeds of my creativity were planted, where my dreams slowly took shape, and where I discovered that even ordinary moments can become extraordinary stories. For that, I will always be grateful.
